Welcome to Mrs.  Klara Lapp's art class website. My goal is to foster  each students’ unique creative potential through challenging yet individualized visual arts experiences that build up students’ self-esteem, arts and communicative skills, and interests in lifelong creating.  Students, parents, and public, check out the "Gallery" link to experience my K-3rd Telluride Elementary School students' artwork and curricular maps.  Please refer to the the "Mrs. Lapp" link  for a biography, testimonials, teacher art work, teaching philosophy,  resume, and contact information.

ART TO REMEMBER FUNDRAISER- is a fall art material fund raising project that each PreK, KG, 1,2 and 3rd grade art students participates in.  Purchasing products is encouraged, yet optional. This fall, students will bring home information on how to purchase products with their art printed on them.  Products will NOT be delivered to the school, instead each order will be shipped directly to you (or your loved one). Ordering is ONLINE ONLY , this year's parent order due date is in November, it will be communicated to you via parent emails .   We profit 25% from each product sale.  If you would rather donate directly to the TES/TIS art department, talk to Mrs. Lapp. For more information refer to the Art to Remember website link:

Portfolio Review Grading

All art is stored in an art portfolio and graded before the end of each trimester (quarter Schoology progress report grade /semester Powerschool grade for TIS).  Students are graded these factors: participation/effort/behavior (3rd), and “school work" = understands and applies skills and concepts ” (K-3rd). This school work score is determined during the portfolio review, where all unit projects are used as evidence for a holistic grade on the body of work.  The potential grades are: 4 (exceeds mastery, working at 1 or 2 grade levels beyond, only a few students earn this, and this grade is NOT expected), 3 (mastery, aim for this grade to be “on target”), 2 (approaching mastery), 1 (not approaching mastery). If you earn a 2, you should try to raise your score the next term by paying closer attention during lecture/demos, improving your work ethic, spend more time on assigned projects and less time on "free draw", self reflecting on your art work (how does it compare to the class student samples), practicing art at home (helps with creativity and fine motor skills). If you earn a 1, you are urged to come to a parent/teacher/student conference so that you can at least earn a 2 next term.

Here are some factors I take into consideration when grading portfolios on “Understands and applies skills and concepts”:

Concepts (I focus on the 6 C’s)

Creative Process, originality, variation, takes risks, reflects on work, makes changes

Content expresses ideas, moods, people, or places clearly and uniquely, aptly uses  elements and principles of design as described for the assignment

Craftsmanship, organized, good composition, labeled, neatness or deliberate control

Completion to the best of your ability

Composition plans out and smarty uses the page/space provided, page fill, not many blank/white spots unless the use of negative space is intentional

Challenges self, perseverance leads to growth, good use of time, on task

Skills

Techniques applies skills (these vary according to assignment/grade level, here are a few examples: Resist, wet-on-wet watercolor, cutting, folding, blending, shading, tinting, showing depth, texturizing, pinch pot, coil pot, slip and scoring)

Media applies skills (these vary according to assignment/grade level, here are a few examples: pastels, watercolor, tempera, brushes, collage paper, clay)

Why is visual art important?

  • develops problem solving, decision making, risk taking, and discovery learning.

  • provides practice for fine motor, communication, and social skills

  • nurtures empathy via student connections

  • boosts critical thinking and observational skills

  • fosters learner self-direction, management, and reflection

  • increases engagement via arts integration with other disciplines

  • empowers by connecting students to their own cultures and promotes cultural appreciation
